Meeting Kevin...Ecuador 2012

I was blessed to be able to go to Ecuador this year!  It all started back in October of last year when the church members were given the opportunity to sponsor kids in Ecuador.  In 2010 The Crossing had an initiative to build 10 churches around the world.  They partnered with Compassion International to build this one in a small community in Ecuador called Las Lagunas.  They have done child sponsorship before, but this time felt different and I knew we had to do one...I purposely picked a boy younger than Jayson and born in June...Jay's 4th child :)  Kinda jokingly, I said it would be cool to one day actually go and see the kid we sponsor.  Then when they announced the trips planned for the year in January, I had that same feeling, God tugging at my heart to go and after much thought, I went!

we would see pics of the church at church and it was this little red church on top of hill, so was pretty cool to be able to see it in person...after school the kids run up the hill and have a safe place to play, eat and learn
was a group of 24 of us from The Crossing, 6 from the Crossing in Tulsa
we painted the fence around the playground and in the classroom
visited homes...

and just played
the most exciting part, meet the kids we sponsor
part of the Compassion program works with new moms to ensure that the kids are learning and healthy
As worried as I was about being out of my comfort zone, it really wasn't a rough trip at all, perfect for a first Missions Trip...I mean we stayed on the beach :)
we bused 40 minutes inland every day to Las Lagunas
what's so great about Compassion International is that it is not just about giving money, it's about teaching life skills so that people can make their communities a better place
they are advocates for children and their mission is to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults
I never took Spanish, so I had a wonderful translator, Lucia

breakfast and dinner were at the hotel, buffet style...I usually had ceviche which they eat with banana chips, and pastries, the chocolate croissants there were amazing, seriously the best!

I was surprised to learn that some eat ceviche with popcorn, I liked it

dinner was usually american style buffet
But lunch was home cooked meals from Sister Rosa
paella!  and the white pineapple was so good...not a huge pineapple person but this one was the best ever.  Throughout the week, she also made empanadas, menudo, fish, so yummy!
Sister Rosa is the one behind it all, an amazing story how she walked into Las Lagunas, saw a need there and brought together the church family, Compassion and The Crossing together

It was also great to get to know more people at the church...I only knew a few prior to the trip
we ran together on the beach and  had fun nights over wine or coffee :)

the best mochachino made with condensed milk

our last day we took the kids to the pool and beach...we were able to bring a back pack full of goodies for them...Jayson gave Kevin his back pack filled with some of his cars

one of the few games I know how how to play and some other stuff like candy, clothes, toys
he really did enjoy the beach, spent most of the time just lifting him up as the waves came with Lucia
got to meet a gal that has been sponsored since she was 3, now in her third year of college studying medicine...amazing to hear how impactful our support and letters can give a child hope :)
My roomie with our amazing Compassion representatives/coordinators/translators, it was so organized, couldn't have been better...Camilo in the middle said something to us that totally made sense that I would have never thought of on my own.  He said, "don't leave thinking you have to sell everything and live with less because of what you have seen, but go home be thankful for what you have and ask God for more so you can give more."  Crazy, cause that is what I was first thinking, have to go home, edit life, etc... and while I still want to be less wasteful, be wiser with time and money, it's great to be reminded that it's okay to blessed and enjoy life and what God has given us as long as we are also being generous and using some of what he gives us to help others

Napa, SF, SJ

4 days home and had to leave again for my cousin Mark's Wedding in Napa...crazy the girls got to JetSuite again :)  The plan was to leave Thursday after work.  Wednesday night the update comes out for LV to San Jose, but leaving early by 11am, both Jay and I had to work still so Dee and Matt took them and since mom and dad were already there for the wedding, they watched the girls til we picked them up.  Had to have a talk with Jayson about him not being able to fly since he was so upset because they would get sprite :)  After we told him he could have whatever he wants, he was fine.
just realized now as I am uploading that Jaylin actually had coke!  That girl!
They obviously had more fun with Auntie Dee!
as soon as we got to Napa went straight to the pool
dinner rehearsal time at Viansa Winery...ceremony was out here in the front
while the girls were reahearsing we had some wine and ice-cream, so different now that they are older, don't have to stay with them and worry about them walking down the isle...almost time for them to retire :)
 winery was beautiful
got to meet newest cousin DJ
dinner was at :)

the Ragaza brothers

later that night we all got together to do s'mores
and listen to Isa and Maya play the ukulele while the rest of us sang...they are so good!
Wedding Time...couple pic
girl cousin pic
the girls with the beautiful bride Tania

the girls waved butterfly wands and the little one carried a sign that said "here comes the bride" and then "and they lived happily ever after"
reception was beautiful inside a big white tent with gold and purple butterflies
was good to have the outdoors so close, so the kids could run around and play
in addition to one of the best wedding cakes ever, a smore's bar outside
was the perfect wedding, I think the one I cried the most at...mother's speech, mark's speech to Tania, brothers played/sang a song for them, so good!  Congrats Mark and Tania!
brunch was fun the next day filled with all kinds of animal heads, duck, chicken and fish...yum:)
Spent the rest of the week at Melissa's...went to check out Santa Cruz, hadn't been in forever...much more fun now that the kids are bigger and can ride rides
but they can't seem to walk :)
girls loved this, rode it twice...roller coaster below was okay, the bigger one on the second level was a little much for Jaylin
of course had to have boardwalk food...already had funnel cake, but then Jay also got deep fried everything...twinkie, pb & j and oreos...pb& j was the best...but was sick that night :)
was able to meet up for Shirley's birthday...looks like we're in a parking lot, but were actually in a pretty cute place, Naglee Park Garage...outside seating was pretty small, but it was nice out and they had music
also got to meet up with old Williams Sonoma friends, always nice to see them, it's like nothing's changed :)
such a yummy steak, noodle, mango salad at Houstons now called Hillstone, definitely going back for that!
after lunch met up with Jay and the kids at Pier 39, played in the arcade, got cotton candy...swear Jayme had cotton candy everyday of vacation :)
stopped at the Ferry Building...never been so wanted to check it out as I heard they had good coffee and chocolate
always a surprise to see these, especially since I didn't realize miette had them
they were good, different then other places, regardless of the flavor inside they all had an almond outside...will definitely be going back to the Ferry Building since we didn't have much time to spend there...I didn't like Blue Bottle coffee though, was pretty but didn't taste good :(
Friday was Great America Day with cousins, so much fun now with the water side, especially because of the slides

didn't have to worry about losing Jaylin, her suit was neon coral, didn't realize how bright it was til she wore it outside :)
family raft was so fun, could fit all five of us :) of course had to make them go again so I could get some pics cause it was just so fun :)
water playground was cool, super cold water though

even though we have Boiling Crab at home, still have to have it before we leave :)  ordered to go at Melissa's and Grace and Ralph and Rosalynn came by to visit

deguzmans always have fun in the bay, hope to be back soon!

on the road trip home found this!  So exciting, since my name is never anywhere :)
